Tools for Comic, Webcomic, and Webtoon Creators

Want to make your own comic? This page suggests tools you may find useful. Free and open-source options are provided where possible.

Content Management

ComixCore
Created as a more basic alternative to Toocheke. Comixcore gives you a number of customization options out of the box without having to know html. Comics display is through a plugin that works with other WordPress themes.

Toocheke
Toocheke is a very professional and popular theme for WordPress that adds a lot of comic and Patreon functionality to your website.

WordPress
This is one of the most popular choices for creating a website to display your comics. Tutorials, plugins, and themes are easy to find. (See above.)

Graphics Software

Affinity
Affinity combines vector, pixel, and layout abilities. It is freeware with pay options for AI use. The base program meets the needs for editing images and creating PDFs without the AI features, but the learning curve is a bit steeper than other programs. Tutorials are available online, just make sure they’re for the most recent version that combined the three apps into one. Tutorials that say Photo, Designer, or Publisher may be out of date.

Clip Studio Paint
Although it’s not free, Clip Studio is probably the most popular software for creating comics. It frequently goes on sale for VERY cheap. Tutorials and help are very easy to find.

GNU Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is a popular free open source graphics program available on multiple platforms. Tutorials are on YouTube and on this page.

Krita
Krita is a free professional, open source painting program. Tutorials for using it can be found on YouTube and at krita-artists.org.
